By contrast, the one who takes seriously every word of God, and to whom God’s commandments are precious, expresses in the strongest possible way his love for him. Christ too demonstrated his love for his Father by obedience, in his case by obeying the hardest of all commands: the command to lay down his life for his people. Obedience brings its own reward because the Spirit of God deepens our assurance as we observe the change God is working in us.The believer is said to be ‘in Christ’ because he has a place in the covenant of grace, but here the phrase refers to the living connection between God and the believer. We know ‘that we are in him’ because there is a life-giving connection between us.
Application
Love for God is more convincingly expressed by simple acts of obedience than by great boasts of affection without them.
Questions
The context makes clear that the love of God here is not God’s love for us, but our love for him, for although God certainly loves the obedience of his children, the subject is obedience as an expression of our love for God.
