Comments
To abide in him is to remain in him as long as we live, that is for all eternity. We abide in him because we know him as our Lord and our Saviour, because we have vowed to obey him, and because we have fellowship with him.If we want to know that we are in him without self-deception, we dare not apply any other test to ourselves than the one he applies to us. What is the measure of obedience? It is nothing less than the perfect example that the Lord Jesus Christ has set us. He came into this world partly to show mankind what it had never seen before: an example of sinlessness. Christ drew attention to his perfect obedience and even challenged his enemies to prove him guilty of sin. However discouraging it may be at times we cannot set any lesser standard before us.
Application
If Christ is our standard, then we will need to continue to make progress until the last day of our lives. We will make progress as we gaze upon the glory of the Lord, and reflect deeply on his life: his person and his works, his words, his responses, his trials, and his victories.
