Comments
Though light is come into the world, men loved darkness rather than light; some who claim with their mouths to be in the light, deny it by their actions. John joins walking in the light with love, but here is someone who claims to be in the light, the same light that was in Christ, and yet, while Christ loved his own disciples to the end, this one hates his brother for whom also Christ died. One commentator says, ‘The command to love one another was one of the most solemn and earnest that Christ ever enjoined, it is made the peculiar badge of discipleship.’
Application
The reason we love our brother is not because he is always lovely, but because Christ is in him. It is not we who decide who should be in God’s family but the Lord; he assembles his family according to his own wisdom.
Where we see those who cannot put hostility to death and learn to love all God’s people, then again there is reason to doubt the genuineness of their profession of faith.
This command obliges us to overcome all causes of hatred that might arise in our hearts against our brother, and to overcome them for Christ’s sake.
