1 John 3:1
Comments
Those who are born of God are nothing less than the children of the everlasting God. John wishes his readers to grasp the enormity of this truth and explore the love in God’s heart that could have brought about such an amazing change. God has brought sinners who were his natural enemies into the closest possible relation with him; only love could have overcome the multitude of obstacles that lay in the way. Christians must not let the world take away any of the wonder of this blessing, for they realise that the world refuses to admit that any such transformation has taken place. This lack of recognition could easily become a stumbling block to faith and assurance in the Christian. John contents himself with an explanation for this failure that goes no further than a similar even more remarkable failure: the failure of the same world to recognise God’s only begotten Son. If they did not know him who was perfect in every way, is it any surprise that they do not know us who obey God from the heart, but who also sin daily?
Application
The believer cannot afford to turn to unbelieving friends for comfort, for they deny the only thing that can really give him real comfort.
