Comments
The emphasis in the second half of the verse is on the words ‘not’, for John has again switched back to the negative side of his comparison, and there is a deliberate contrast with the positive form of the same statement in verse 7. Conduct provides the only reliable proof of conversion. The children of the devil may attempt to walk in the way for a time, but since they do not have the root of the matter in them, they cannot keep up the charade.Again he tags onto the end of the verse his next subject, linking it with the previous one: righteous conduct is essential, but so also is brotherly love.
Application
Sin is always a matter of deep concern to the believer, because indifference towards it is a sure mark of a hypocrite.
Questions
How can he call all those who have not been born again, children of the devil? Because although fallen men and women still know how to do some good things, the obedience to sin which characterises their lives identifies them as servants to the god of this world, the devil. We belong to him until the moment Christ sets us free.
