Comments
The command to walk as Christ walked, which John says is an old commandment heard by Israel from ancient time (1 John 2:7), is summed up by the duty to love one another. This clear command is necessary because although the new nature finds great delight in expressing love, the old nature wishes to do the opposite.
Application
Love produces a constellation of graces in the believer’s life: patience, gentleness, kindness, care for the weak, a concern to cover over the failings of others, unselfishness, rejoicing in the blessings which others receive, concern for lost souls, and a desire to do good to all.
The world naturally scrutinises believers with deep suspicion at first, because they know how skilful they themselves are at passing muster, but the consistency and genuine simplicity of Christian love convinces them that this is something which is not the product of fabrication or pretence.
