In contrast to the world which, like Cain, hates those who belong to God, the true Christian loves the brethren. God puts this instinctive love in the heart from the moment of conversion, so that the presence of love is a reliable sign of conversion. This makes the church of God a most beautiful assembly of people, and a very pleasant place to be. If any does not love his believing brother, he remains in that state of death in which all come into the world. He is cut off from the only source of life, the Word of life, and so exists and walks in death, the realm of hatred. These are the only two states that man can be in.
Application
We must endeavour to find ways to express love to each other, in sharing others’ joys and sorrows, in words of encouragement, in acts of kindness and support, so that love is always expressed among us. Our aim should be to develop deep ties with God’s people on earth, which will live on in a new form in heaven.
No one is born a Christian; there must be a passing from death to life, since all come into the world as spiritually dead.
