Comments
Here is the perfect example of love: the love of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who laid down his life for his sheep. Love is measured by what it is willing to give, and Christ could give no more than his life for his people. If the love of God is in us, then we will love the same ones that he loves. But his love far exceeds ours, for while men may give a life for a friend – a life which they must eventually lose anyway – Christ possessed immortal life and laid it down for his people while they were still enemies and sinners.
Application
The imitation of Christ is the surest way to know that we belong to him.
Questions
Although the words ‘of God’ are added by the KJV, they are certainly implied, for in the following verse those who fail to imitate this love are said to lack ‘the love of God’. It was God who laid down his life for us on the cross in the person of his Son.
