He who is willing to give much is certainly also willing to give little. If love would lead us to give our lives for our brother, then it will not fail to make us give of our substance.

Comments
He who is willing to give much is certainly also willing to give little. If love would lead us to give our lives for our brother, then it will not fail to make us give of our substance. God does not expect us to give what we do not have, and the case here is of one who has enough and to spare, yet he holds back. Even though he sees a need before him – that of a brother in Christ for whom Christ gave his life – he is not willing to part with his goods, but actively suppresses any feelings of compassion that begin to arise within him lest he become the poorer. How does the love of God dwell in a man like that?
Application
Compassion is a form of love, for love adapts itself to the case before it. What are this world’s goods compared to the riches of heaven; love is therefore ready to exchange the one for the other. Love sees every need as an opportunity to imitate God.
