Comments
What explains a man shutting up the bowels of his compassion, and yet claiming to belong to Christ? The answer is self-deception: at some point he has convinced himself that he loved his brother, when his conscience told him otherwise. He has listened to the words coming out of his mouth, that he has love, and convinced himself that they are true, and yet he fails John’s simple test. This love is too easy and does not qualify as love. Since we are all in the body we have no excuse for not knowing how important bodily needs are. True love is eager to vindicate itself from any accusation of falsehood.
Application
Some have great skill with the tongue, but they only move this little member of the body, and do not learn to coordinate the hands and feet with their claimed love. We should be careful to be very practical in our love and not say we will do things which we fail to follow through on. Kind words should not become a substitute for kind acts.
