Comments
John distinguishes true love from counterfeit love. Only true love entitles us to say that we belong to the truth, for love that is in word only, lacks the power to convince even us, let alone to convince God. Our eternal destiny is of such importance that we cannot afford to lie to ourselves about this matter. The presence of genuine love in our hearts will be a great comfort to us in the day of judgment, for, while we dare not say we have no sin, love is strong evidence of God’s work within us. But we also need to assure our hearts right now as we come to God in daily prayer, for God is not mocked: we cannot expect our prayers to be answered if do not live according to the truth.
Application
Lack of assurance hinders our praise to God, our prayers, our peace, and prevents us serving the Lord with all our hearts. If we wish to increase our assurance, we must find practical ways of expressing love.
