There are only two alternatives, according to Scripture, so that all who are not led by the Spirit of God are led by the spirit of antichrist; humanity is divided into only two groups. A man’s spirit and his mouth are not the same thing, for his mouth may confess one thing while his spirit believes another. Here it is the spirit that confesses, and when the spirit confesses, the whole life underpins that confession. The denial of the incarnation is the essence of the lie which is promoted by the spirit of antichrist, and it underlies Satan’s efforts to deceive the world. His aim is both to deny that Jesus is the Christ, and to present instead his counterfeit christ, the ultimate impostor.
Application
Our enemy is constantly at work, so that testing the spirits is something which we must never cease doing. Each age brings new doctrines and new practices which must be tested by Scripture. We dare not therefore have anything which is off limits for examination.
Questions
How is the spirit of antichrist already in the world, even before the man of sin has been revealed? Satan began to try to bring his representative into the world immediately after the coming of Jesus Christ, but is prevented from doing so until God allows. However, although he is restrained in part, he is allowed to do enough even now to make his intention clear.
