Comments
In contrast to those led by the spirit of antichrist, those confess that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, are of God. John is confident and has no fears for the spiritual safety of God’s children, for in the conflict between truth and error, the true church will never be defeated by the spirit of antichrist. God’s children have overcome, not necessarily as a result of some verbal contest with the false prophets, but because they believe what antichrist denies. The battle is between the Spirit of God and the spirit of antichrist, but the Spirit who dwells in us involves us in the battle, and guarantees us a share in the victory; it is the Lord’s own victory given to us.
Application
God has done everything necessary to assure his children of their ultimate triumph, therefore let them not allow anything to steal from their comfort.
How hopeless would our situation be if we were left to fight alone! We would soon be overcome by the superior power and skill of our enemy, the devil, for he is able to dream up lies that would deceive even the elect if that were possible.
