The record of God is not only that God has sent his Son into the world, but that he has sent him for the purpose of giving us the gift we so desperately need: eternal life. What could be more precious than life to those who have spent all their days under the shadow of death? Death is too strong for us, and all human power and ingenuity has not succeeded in freeing a single human being from its terrible grasp. Therefore nothing should be more welcome than the message of eternal life in Christ. When Scripture speaks of eternal life, it does not have in mind mere endless existence, but a quality of life: everlasting joy in the presence of God and eternal fellowship with him.
Application
When we stretch our minds to think what could occupy us for eternity, we recoil from the immensity of it unless we know Christ, for without him eternity terrifies us. He alone is great enough to fill our eternal future – there are pleasures at his right hand for evermore (Psalm 16:11), and these pleasures are found in God himself, for he is our exceeding great reward (Genesis 15:1).
