The sense of this verse is, ‘All unrighteousness is sin, and yet there is a sin not unto death’. Having spoken of the sin unto death which he does not tell us to pray for, he now returns to the sin which we may pray for.

Comments
The sense of this verse is, ‘All unrighteousness is sin, and yet there is a sin not unto death’. Having spoken of the sin unto death which he does not tell us to pray for, he now returns to the sin which we may pray for. We may ask God to forgive our brother in spite of the fact that his sin is a violation of God’s law, because God forgives even genuine sin.
Application
We should never cease being amazed at the wonder of forgiveness, for there is nothing so much beyond our power to obtain as this. There is nothing more impossible for us than to change the attitude of God towards our sin, and there is nothing with such terrible consequences if his attitude does not change. That our prayers should bring about such a change is a remarkable testimony to the power of prayer.
