Verses 2-12 have really been all doctrine, but Peter doesn’t apply it until verse 13. Now the application comes as a torrent, but first comes the doctrine which in the New Testament and the Epistles always precedes application.
We have seen some of the charismatic preachers on the religious channels on the television and we have observed the way in which they race up and down the platform and shout and rave and harangue the people with all kinds of exhortations and there hasn’t been a single Scriptural reason given why. It hasn’t come from the Scripture; it has come from them; it is what they think. How different our preaching should be! If they started with the Scripture and then they came to the point where they said, ‘Do this; do that’, then the Scripture would speak and deliver them from all the preacher’s own ideas.
