By taking our nature the Lord put himself within reach of sinful men and women who by their harsh words and cruel actions took the opportunity to pour contempt upon him. He suffered ill treatment not deserved by any law-abiding man, let alone by the eternal Son of God.
The disciple can follow Christ and leave all the injustices of this life to God. We can exercise this trust first because we are sure that God knows all about our circumstances. He sees not just what people do to his children – the hurt it causes and the cruelty of it. God forgets none of these things and their sinfulness does not fade in his mind. When he finally acts in defence of his children, he will treat those crimes as if they had only just been committed. The Lord sees all the plotting and scheming of our enemies and all of the deceit involved in their tactics. All this shameful behaviour will be brought out into the open so that they will be speechless before him. During their earthly lives they claimed not to know Christ or his people, but God will show exactly how much they knew.
