This is a general truth. Peter is writing to Christians, many of whom suffer grievously in various ways.
What are we doing in planning our lives so carefully? It’s nice, yes, good that you should do up your flat and your house and live in a pleasant way for your family and children, nothing wrong with that. But you go another 100 miles and you make it perfect and wonderful, you consume so much time, so much wealth is endowed upon it, so much leisure time. No, if you want a good life, a good, spiritual life and usefulness for God, you watch your speech, you plan to do good, you follow Christ and Paul and the examples of the Scripture and so many throughout the history of the church, who laboured for him. And who is he, from the devil down, who can possibly harm you, if ye be imitators, followers of that which is good?
