The name Christian was already in use by this time. Having done all in their power to avoid any justifiable grounds for suffering, believers may yet still have to suffer unjustly at the hands of an unbelieving world and of the devil.
It is an honour, if God wills, that a man should suffer as a Christian, for in so doing he has the clearest possible likeness to his Lord and Saviour. Where the world pours shame and scorn on Christians, there God compensates them with glory, so that the result the world seeks to achieve is thwarted and the final state of the believer is greater than before the persecution. In everything the world seeks to achieve, it is frustrated by the wisdom of God, while at the same time God allows evil men to go far enough for their true character to be set on display.
The temptation to be ashamed comes from seeing things from the perspective of the world, but by faith the Christian rejoices in the glory to be revealed. The world strives to make the believer ashamed, for it wants to make all things conform to its pattern, and shame is a powerful way of putting pressure on those who do not conform. It wants the believer to see himself as a despised person since this is the most powerful way that it can repudiate Christ, his salvation in the gospel, and his people on earth.
