The purpose of this verse is to offer comfort to the church regarding those believers who have died and over whom the world has appeared to triumph. The unbelieving world had seemed to succeed in carrying out its murderous intent against some who had been persecuted to the point of giving their lives.
The fact that God allows his people to suffer physical death is no indication of his indifference to our plight. ‘Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints’ (Psalm 116:15). We should not interpret this providence to mean that God is against us or does not love us as his children; it is simply part of his perfect plan. The Christian then can be completely at peace about the outcome of his struggle against the world, the flesh and the devil, for if it comes to the point where he must lay down his life for Christ’s sake, he is confident, for both in life and in death God is his Saviour. If the dead are not beyond Christ’s care, then we lose nothing by having to lay down our lives for his sake.
