This is a test that searches our hearts. We may feel we have been wronged and that we are entitled to be angry. Someone has thought the worst of us when they should have given us the benefit of the doubt and looked for a better explanation for what they witnessed.
Eli’s example to us is to acknowledge our faults immediately, and not to justify ourselves when we have misjudged another. We may be embarrassed at what we have done; there may be some reason why we did what we did; but we have wronged another, and we quickly retrace our steps and apologise if necessary for the sake of peace among God’s people.
