All these signs have a powerful effect on Saul. He is no doubt deeply affected by them and is turning them over in his mind, but he is not going to say anything about this to anyone in his family. He is very discreet. Perhaps there is shame here, knowing what kind of reception such information would meet with from a member of his own non-worshipping family. Or perhaps Samuel has bound him to secrecy. In his report he leaves out any reference to his being anointed as king, but speaks of Samuel, who his uncle at least knows about, and reports only Samuel’s prophetic word that the asses have been found. Saul’s uncle evidently knows nothing about Saul prophesying, for he is ready to believe Saul’s shortened account of events.
