‘And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him [Goliath].’ We hear spiritual language again.
We learn a lesson from this. As far as God is concerned, and in spiritual matters for the people of God, tenacity, faith, courage, immense strength is not inconsistent with meekness and gentleness. In fact, they go together for Christian people. We are commanded to be meek; it is a fruit of the Spirit. We are commanded to be gentle, to be always courteous and kind and sensitive and feelingful. Yet we are also commanded, spiritually, in faith, to be strong, and to be courageous, to be very bold and courageous in witness, and standing up to wrong and to the devil, and we are those who are to stand up in the most taxing and testing of circumstances. You don't have to be ferocious. Don't think it's only the world that equates strength and success with pride and great confidence, and a rough manner and haughtiness. The great triumph of the Spirit of God is that people, Christian people, are made gentle and kind and affectionate, and yet are people of tremendous strength and courage. These things go together. But it means that the world underestimates the Christian, and so David was greatly underestimated.
All of us have had some experiences, where the Lord has helped us through something we never thought we would get through, and we never thought we would be able to accomplish, because we prayed to him, and he has seen us through. And you have to ask with David, ‘Why? What was the purpose of this deliverance?’ You almost can't talk about it to other people, because they would think you had become spiritually proud of yourself, or it was some sort of a boast. So it's a secret with you. But you know the Lord enabled you, and you must always remember that, and mark that, because something is coming along where you will need the word of God, and real trust in the Lord, and the Lord may already have given you a token, which will help. So we never forget significant blessings. They are not, as in the Charismatic world, something to boast about. They are often just for us, but don't forget them. Don't forget your lions and your bears, because something far greater will summon all your reserves of faith and trust.
