We imagine that he had a mighty voice. ‘And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array?’ He announces the Philistine proposal that he as a champion or representative would be contested by one of the Israelites, and that will determine the battle.
Faith overcomes fear, but Saul was not a man of faith, and few others in the army of Israel seem to have been. We are soon to see what difference faith makes in the case of David, but first we are shown this picture of intimidation in the vast majority of those there. The world knows how to intimidate. It uses boasts and false claims and denigration to try to undermine confidence in the Lord, and to make the saints feel pathetic and unable to fight. It draws attention to those things which man admires, and parades its gifts, while denigrating the people of God. But those who walk by faith have an entirely different way of looking at things which exposes the fallacy of the world’s outlook.
