‘Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, and was departed from Saul.’ That very murderous act seems to convict Saul that he was a wretched person abandoned by God, and David was the man.
That is very illustrative of the life of the Christian. In some ways God can be blessings us, and at the same time the enemy, the devil, can be harassing us very sorely. Life is never smooth. It is comprised of spiritual graces and successes, tests, hardships, enemy attacks, but nothing can take away our spiritual life, and our spiritual inheritance. That is reflected here: the levels at which David had to live his life.
We must never underestimate the danger of daily life as a Christian, the fact that the enemy of souls may at any day seek to bring us down, that there are demons of darkness watching us all the time, working perhaps through hostility of people around us, trying to get us to react badly, to let the Lord down, or trying to lure us into some temptation. We are safe as we could be, dependent upon the Lord, but a moment's carelessness can bring us into danger. This is depicted here for our learning in the latter days: the world against the church, Saul against David. Look at the record of cunning; look at the different attempts to hurt and wound and bring down. Translate it to our present experience: the world against the church, Satan against the individual believer.
