But the population made matters pretty hard for David without realising it. ‘And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick’ – the Hebrew says ‘three stringed instruments’.
How should he have dealt with this jealousy? If he has got this awareness that his own kingdom will come to an end, and God has somehow buried it deeply within him, and he has been warned by Samuel the prophet; if he knows these things, can’t he accept them? Or can’t he turn to God in repentance to pray, perhaps that he may resume his kingdom, or at least be set aside gracefully? If he is convinced of this, doesn't he respond to God? No, he fights it; and he is going to do all that he can, to destroy David and to take on God himself.
