This is really one of the most wonderful prayers in the Old Testament. The theme of this prayer forms part of Mary's prayer at the nativity of Christ, the Magnificat, Mary's song of worship.
We remind ourselves constantly that our special time of prayer must begin with God and the worship of God, focusing upon him and naming his attributes, and wondering at him and expressing our love for him. Our emergency prayers, and our moment-by-moment prayers may not do so, but in this carefully considered prayer Hannah doesn't start with herself: ‘Thank you for my child’. No, it’s all about the Lord.
