As you go through these verses, you can see that in some cases they are literally true; in many cases they are figuratively true, but they are always spiritually true. The Lord killeth and maketh alive.
The Lord killeth and maketh alive.’ I heard this wonderfully dealt with once some years ago by a preacher in an evangelistic service, and this was his text: ‘The Lord killeth and maketh alive. He bringeth down to the grave and bringeth up’. That is an evangelistic text for you!
You see it today in the churches. You hear of big-time preachers, and they hire Public Relations men, and they are constantly promoting themselves, and have got to be applauded even in their churches. They have got to appear big, and they are working by fleshly principles. They may have the truth; they may be preachers of the truth, but they have gone wrong and they saying to themselves, ‘If I can appear special; if I can be applauded; if I can be a great one, I will be more listened to. ‘No’, says the Lord, ‘that it exactly wrong. Proceed as a lowly person, a lowly preacher. Drive an ordinary car; wear an ordinary watch; behave like an ordinary person, and you are vastly more likely to be blessed and to be used by God. This is a principle, a principle that runs through all our lives. Promote ourselves, and the blessings and the benefits of God are minimised.
