Hypocrites may at times appear very zealous for what is right, but love and mercy have a better understanding of what God requires. It is the trick of a proud man to try to legitimise the ways in which he expresses his pride. He wants to have strong allies and so he tries to get the law of God on his side. But because he lacks mercy, he errs, and goes off in the wrong direction. He has only a part of the truth, and he takes that part and warps it into something which serves his proud purposes.
