As before (1 Samuel 24:2) Saul takes with him three thousand crack troops especially selected from Israel, versus David's six hundred men who were not trained soldiers at all. ‘And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way.
We see even so mighty a man of faith as David falling terribly in his reasoning and in his conduct several times in his life, and that is a warning to us. How easy it is to forsake God and fall. While we keep hold with the provisions God has given us, and his word and prayer, and we stay close to him, we cannot fall. But as soon as we begin to relax our hold on our ‘spiritual exercises’ – as they used to be called – then we are highly vulnerable. We are going to see a picture of it here. These chapters shouldn't cause us to cease to admire David. We note his strengths forward, and his faith, and his tremendous zeal and toleration of adversity, but even he falls.
