‘David answered and said, Behold, the king’s spear. Let one of the young men come over and fetch it’, which is his way of saying, ‘I am not returning. I am not coming back to court.’ And he puts himself in the Lord's hands, not Saul's. David might just as well say, ‘You are my king, Saul, and I am not going to do any harm to you, even given the opportunity, but I'm certainly not going to believe your repentance, and come back to court. ‘The Lord render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness. For the Lord delivered thee into my hand today, but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the Lord's anointed. And behold as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the Lord.’ I am trusting my safety to the Lord, David shouts back publicly, ‘Let him deliver me out of all tribulation.’ So Saul's repentance is not going to be accepted, and he is not going to be trusted by David.
