‘Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.’ Samuel did not yet know the Lord in one particular sense: he had never heard a voice; he had never received a vision, a direct communication.
Says Matthew Henry, how many people get accustomed to the voice of the minister and they don't realise when the Lord is speaking to them. Well that happens frequently. Of course ministers, preachers are very fallible, and they cannot claim inspiration, and everything they say must be proved from the word of God. But equally, if they are speaking from the word of God, and it's quite clear they are making application from the word of God, then don't miss out. The Lord may be speaking to you, and if you get into the mindset of only hearing a person or an individual, and you never allow for the fact that there is a message for you from the Lord, then it will be a loss to you. Samuel wasn't to blame; he was a youngster and this was a new experience for him. We are seasoned believers, so don’t hear just the minister, when often you should be hearing the Lord addressing your own soul.
