Then a further provision of God: ‘When he had brought him down’, with his mere four hundred men, ‘behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing.’ Many of them dead drunk evidently, others still eating and drinking and dancing and half tipsy, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines and out of the land of Judah.
So we are cautioned against backsliding: coldness, times of indifference. God will never forsake those who truly belong to him, but it could be a costly restoration, so don't let it go far. Stop, pull back, tell him how much you love him, cast yourself on his kindness. Come back to him, reapply yourself. Whenever we find ourselves drifting into coldness, those are the steps, it is vital to take.
