Needless to say, ‘Israel was smitten’, a very great slaughter, ‘thirty thousand footmen, and the ark was taken and the sons of Eli were slain.’ Something rather tragic then happens.
God does not allow us to play games with him and manipulate him. When we think that we will escape the judgment of God, because it would bring too much scandal on his cause if our sin were to be exposed, we fail to reckon with his zeal for holiness. If any try this, they will find some fearful providence opens up for them, for God would rather bring temporary dishonour on his cause than go along with our sin.
God has heavy judgments even for his own children when they go astray, and especially when they fail in their duty to protect the purity of the worship of God.
