‘And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them’ – not to oppose them, but just coming towards them – ‘for to go up to the high place.’ But here is Saul who would be the king, and he has no idea about the spiritual life.
That is what we want. We want pastors in the churches of Jesus Christ, who are one with the brethren, approachable men. There should be no aggrandisement, nothing special, no special elevation. You don't want anything delineating the pastor, making him stand out as above other people, not even a hint of it. That is how it used to be in ancient times. Samuel couldn't be distinguished and recognised. He is walking along without any retinue, and he has to announce himself to Saul. That is precious and wonderful.
