Here is the fifth mark of grace. ‘For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power.
Sometimes today we see people say, I believe in Christ, I believe I am a Christian. But there is no power. They have not been changed very much. They still live largely as worldlings. Come to church maybe just once a week, like the people I mentioned earlier, somewhat reluctantly. That is not the same as this touch of power that changes my life and I must be for Christ.
Think of what it cost those Thessalonians to become Christians. They were idolaters. They went to idol temples. They belonged to trade guilds which worshipped idols. Some of them may have been silversmiths, others in other crafts. But in every craft and every activity that was pursued where you could earn good money, you belonged to a trade guild and you went to idol feasts. And now you would no longer go. The power of God has got hold of you. I will not go to the idol temple. I cannot belong to that trade guild that is idolatrous. And you leave it and you get thrown out of employment, and so you have to take to lowlier, manual employment. You have to go and get hired by the different farmers and woodchoppers and all the rest of it. You cannot do anything skilled. You have lost your station, you have lost your status.
