1 Thessalonians 3:9
Comments
The chapter now focuses on Paul’s prayerfulness, but the first thing in his prayer life in not his petitions, not in these verses anyway. The first thing in his prayer life is his thankfulness. Verse 9 implies he is thanking God from the moment Timothy returned. I see him going about his business in the morning, whether he is mending tents, because he supported himself. However exalted his position, he worked with his hands, it was his great principle, and he supported himself. And in-between different actions and things that demanded his concentration, he would think of the Thessalonians and others too and praise God for the news that he had heard. How times in the course of a day did he praise God for this new news from the Thessalonians? And he praised God and thanked God ‘for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God.’
Application
Oh for minds that are tuned in to the things of God, to the work of God, to how people are getting on, to salvation, minds that think in these terms, not just in earthly terms. And between the stitching of the canvas, the apostle Paul would thank God for the things that he had heard.
