The word ‘honesty’ comes from a Greek word meaning well-formed, formed in a respectable way, which was broadened to mean in a respectable way, decently. There are some things that unbelievers do respect in believers. They are not interested in your godliness; indeed it may offend them. Yes, but there are things that even they respect. They respect honesty and fairness, and self-control. They appreciate someone who does not lose their temper or over-react. They notice these things, especially when so many unbelievers around you are behaving badly: not listening to the other side of the argument, not keeping their word, not showing any wisdom in how they handle difficult situations. These things are therefore part of your testimony and very important. They respect an orderly and disciplined person who has a well-formed and respectable life, doing what is right. So we are to apply ourselves to these things..
