1 Thessalonians 5:13 Commentary and Bible Study

The word ‘esteem’ has perhaps changed its meaning a little since our King James translation, and esteem now suggests taking a very high view and holding a high regard for, but that would be over-translation, because the Greek indicates consider or regard them, estimate them ‘highly in love for their work’s sake.’ So it does not say pamper them, or make a fuss of them, or turn them into heroes. It means regard them highly, for the sake of their function, their work. It is for the Lord, and it is for you, and it is for the benefit for the church of Christ. And of course, most teachers in the church of Jesus Christ are probably fairly poorly off, and have forgone many of the benefits and greater comforts of life in order to carry out the office. ‘And be at peace among yourselves.’ That is another thought entirely. Be conciliatory is the sense, not hostile, not difficult, not cold, but be peacemakers. There is one modern translation actually expresses it in that way: Be peacemakers. It is not a perfect translation but it has the sense. Be bridge builders, be friendly among the people of God particularly. Be as appreciative as others as you can be. Make this your disposition to a warm and a friendly person.
