You may read this as if ‘appointed’ equals election. That could be what Paul means; it would be a correct thought, but here it is quite a weak word: ‘God has not placed us …’ At the end of verse 8 he speaks of hope.

Comments
You may read this as if ‘appointed’ equals election. That could be what Paul means; it would be a correct thought, but here it is quite a weak word: ‘God has not placed us …’ At the end of verse 8 he speaks of hope. Could it be a vain hope; could it be wrong? Can I be certain? Yes, if you have been placed in this position, if God has worked in your life. You were a cynic, but now you desire to obey Christ and you know the Scriptures are true. You received the evidence of a new nature. Christ is everything to you. You can pray. You have a new outlook. It is not about predestination here but about what has actually happened to you. Therefore strengthen yourselves. Don’t go astray and live in a dream, preoccupied with self. Pray regularly, intercede, looking for the final day, proving him. The devil will try to drag us back to the old life.
Application
Why are we saved? In order that we can have a nice time here in this world? There is nothing worse than books that get us thinking like this. God did not save us for this. He wants us to be those who are awake to his purposes in this world and living to promote his cause.
