‘Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ’, the one born out of due time. There were the Twelve but one was false, so there were the Eleven plus Matthias, and then Paul.
Are you living as a Christian anticipating something, looking forward to something, desiring something? This is not the only place where the Lord Jesus Christ is described as our hope. The Christian life is made up of great longing and hoping, desiring and expecting: this is the mood that the Christian should have. If you do not have this outlook you will very soon be sucked down by all your trials and problems. The difficulties around you will rise higher and will swamp your thinking. We are supposed to be people who give much time and thought to anticipating great blessings, especially in the distant future when God takes us to himself, when there is that greatest adventure of the flight from time into eternity.
Some people are pretending to be apostles today. They say they are apostles and therefore they are getting revelations, and they should be especially listened to. The word apostle simply means one who is sent, and it is sometimes used in the Scripture in this very general sense. Occasionally people are described as apostles in the Scripture who are just preachers or messengers. Yes the word apostle can be used to designate a preacher or a church planter, but most generally it is used to apply in a very special and limited sense to the Twelver apostles of the Lord and the apostle Paul born out of time, so it's quite wrong to say that the strict meaning of the Greek translated ‘apostle’ is simply one who is sent. No, it means more than that. It has a very specific usage and it describes one who was appointed an apostle, and that is the sense in which Paul always uses it when he describes himself as an apostle. He is describing his special authority as an inspired penman of Holy Scripture. They were instructed by the Lord personally. Now the apostle Paul of course was not instructed by the Lord personally during his earthly ministry, but he was instructed by the Lord by revelation in a special way and he was the only one to whom this applied. He tells us he was the only one who is an exception, who was to see the risen Lord in that special manner after he had ascended into heaven.
