This epistle is not only about the church; it is full of great statements that lift up our souls and furnish our understanding. This is the first of five faithful sayings all in the pastoral epistles, sayings about which we are certain, sure sayings.
There are those who say, ‘Thank you very much, I do not need rescuing. You are painting me as some kind of a sinner, hopeless, helpless, lost, condemned. I reject that. I'm not a lost person. This is a good world. There are problems, but I'm going to be happy and I'm going to do what I want to do and have what I want to have. What a tragedy to say that! If we don't accept that we are sinners and need a Saviour then there is no hope for us. God will not deal with any of us, if we do not see our need of forgiveness and we do not humble ourselves before him, repenting of our sin and crying out for blessing from him. We must ask God to move in our hearts, ask him to show us our need of salvation.
What will happen to you if you come to Christ will be just as powerful as what happened to Paul. You will not hear the voice of Christ speaking out loud to you, but you will be struck by a realization that these things are true. Christ came and he suffered and died for sinners like me. And the devil will try to cast into your mind doubts, but you will be certain. You never felt like this before. You were brought up to doubt these things. You grew up in this atheistic society; you drank it all in. You wanted unrestricted sinful pleasure, whatever suited you. You will come to Christ Jesus, and he will lay his hand upon you, and he will flood your mind with understanding, and you will take up the Scriptures and understand the gospel. You will find you can pray and call upon him, and your prayers begin to be answered. You will find there is a work of grace within you. You begin to hate your sin. You think different thoughts and better thoughts. You will be a true Christian on the road to heaven, and now you will look at this verse and say, ‘I have proved this. I have joined the millions of others.
