The ultimate purpose of the gospel is holiness before God and in his presence. There is a use of the law that is for a righteous man, but he focuses on the first use of the law: ‘Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man.
‘The law is not made for a righteous man.’ It is easy to misunderstand that, and some people do. They say, ‘That means, if we are saved, if they converted, then the law no longer applies to us.’ Then they misunderstand other verses too, and they say, ‘We are not under law; we are under grace, so the Ten Commandments are no longer the rule of life for the believer.’ This is one of the verses they come to, and it is easy to misunderstand it by taking it out of its context. But although the translation is perfectly correct the meaning of the verse could be brought out by replacing the word ‘righteous’ with the word ‘self-righteous’. Paul is dealing with those who tried to use the law to justify themselves. The law does have a very important use for the truly righteous man, but it is not to justify himself.
