This is the same requirement as for elders (verse 4), and, for the same reason given there, indicates that the deacon also has a role in the care of the family of God. He too must know how to relate to people, and not mishandle the affairs of the church, and cause unnecessary disturbances, or unnecessary resentment.These are the reasons why we would believe that the deacons must be men. Their task is authoritative in many ways. They correspond to the almoners of Acts 6, who had a very responsible task which involved authority and which included a measure of ministry. They are ranked with the elders of the church sharing their authority and their position in a way, and their qualities. They are qualities which suggest a lead and a rule in the church of Jesus Christ.
