This is another insight into the function of these leaders. They are to manage and take care of and rule the church of God. They are seeking to secure from the people obedience to God's word. When somebody goes off at a tangent, it is the task of the elders to try to sit down and persuade them, to secure obedience to God's Word and understanding. So we want people who manage their homes well. Do they have affection for their families? Do they protect their families spiritually? Do they have concern and responsibility and at least some degree of wisdom? Do they head off problems, and plan things in the best spiritual interests of their family and children, or are they completely blind as bats to what is going on? Can you see the children of office bearers coming to grief, because those office bearers seem to be quite unseeing? The churches of Jesus Christ come into difficulty when they neglect all these standards.
