But then Paul says if you remind the people of this, you will be a good minister, that is servant or server of Jesus Christ. Timothy is to remind the people about the coming apostasy.
Timothy was a preacher and he was appointed there and left in Ephesus to preach, to make sure that false teaching was put down and contradicted, and to nourish and build up the people. But he himself must be nourished. Paul tells him, ‘You cannot say, Timothy, that you have arrived, that you are home and dry. You have attained to a good knowledge of doctrine, but if you are not careful you will lose it. You will run downhill.’ Since we have food in mind the apostle seems to say, ‘You need to continue to feed yourself every day.’ Every seasoned believer needs to hear this. We may have found the truth some years ago. Every one of us has found the glorious doctrines of grace. Every one of us has drunk deeply from the wells of Scripture. But never think you have attained, and you can now rest and settle back. Timothy had attained, but he must continue to be nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine. It doesn't matter what we have already attained; if we stop drinking from the wells of Scripture, if we stop reviewing the promises of God, if we stop submitting ourselves to the doctrines, to the exhortations of Scripture, we shall soon run downhill, and we shall soon forfeit any discernment which we may have.
