‘This is a faithful saying’ – what is a faithful saying? What the apostle has just told us: that to ‘exercise thyself rather unto godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.’ This is a reliable saying, a faithful saying.
If you don't live like this, if you live as half a Christian – ‘I thank thee Lord that my sins are washed away; I thank thee Lord that my eyes have been opened; I thank thee Lord that I have come to believe in the Saviour; I thank thee Lord that I have understood many wonderful things from thy word, but Lord, I can't do this, and I can't do that, and I haven't the time, and I am worried what would happen to me. I have got to be half a worldling. I can't come out to church more than once a week.’ I can't undertake these priorities, and I must have a little bit of pleasure from this world. I must go to places of amusement and I must have certain recreations, and I must spend a lot of time with my friends, otherwise I will get depressed. And Lord, I thank thee for all my blessings, and I believe these things, but you must understand me, Lord. I can't yet be fully pledged as a believer, and fully committed.’ You won't have much assurance. You certainly won't have much fruit. You won't be used of the Lord, you won't deepen in your understanding. You will soon deteriorate, not only in practice but in doctrine too. The enemy of your soul will make a fool of you. You won't have real pleasure, real fulfilment, real enjoyment. This is a proven saying, says the apostle. I can tell you assuredly that every apostle, every prophet, every martyr, every child of God in post biblical times, every servant of the Lord who has lived this way, and has gymnasticized, applied themselves with will and with determination and with self-review to study in God's word alone, and obeying it, has proved all the wonderful comfortable blessings of the Lord with light and understanding and power. This is a faithful saying, worthy to be embraced fully by the Lord's people. Will you embrace the lifestyle of a true believer? Will you gymnasticize, aim at total commitment to the Lord and usefulness to him. Will you have spiritual priorities, dedication to the church of Christ on earth, to which he has called you to serve him and love him? Will you take this route this way? Will you say God promises blessings to his people and safety and security, if they live this way, It is a proven statement, and I will appropriate it.
