There are other qualifications. ‘Well reported of for good works’, someone who has brought up children.
Our primary task is always towards the people of God. Of course, through conversion, we are given great sensitivities and sympathies. If we see victims of tragedy, earthquake and flood, and we see children, little children who are destitute, our hearts will go out to them. We have believers' hearts, and we will want to help and give relief. As a fruit of conversion, and the churches of Christ have always been famous in those respects. Who were the founders of the ragged schools and the Sunday schools and the care institutions, It was the people of God. When were the great periods of provision at times of reformation and awakening? and revival, when hearts were moved in sympathy? But our primary task is not the relief of poverty. And it is a great mistake, and contrary to the Scripture. That idea came out of the Lausanne Congress years ago and is promoted widely to this day among churches: the idea that the duty of the church of Christ may be portrayed rather as the two wings of a bird. One of the wings represents outreach or gospel, and the other, equally emphasized wing, represents compassion and compassionate work. That is not the New Testament picture. It is not two equal wings of a bird. The gospel is everything. It is the chief priority. One of the fruits of conversion is helpfulness and good works, but it is not our primary duty. But of course, within the household of faith, relief of needs is a special responsibility.
