The Apostle Paul is, if anything, quite sympathetic to the younger widows. He says they should be free to remarry, as he goes on to advise later.
When we are talking about headship of the house, which is God's order, and the husband being the head of the home, the head of the family, the head of the house, accountable to God; when we think of that, that doesn't mean that the wife is nothing at all. Here the apostle uses a very strong verb, and we home on this; it is important that we should do so – ‘guide the house’ or manage the house. Yes, there is a lot of management, even for the wife. There is a distribution of roles. What she does, she has responsibility for. And there are various aspects of the operation of the home, training up of the young children. Of course, her husband is the head of the house. But managing the affairs of the household and perhaps organizing, and particularly with an eye to hospitality, there are certain things that the wife is to manage, almost in an executive way. There is a distribution of roles, satisfying all the gifts of both parties. So quite a strong word is used here. All this is to avoid slander from outsiders, and which the devil will stir up.
