In the early 1970s in various parts of the world quite a number of medical research laboratories started to do work to find out what it was that was effective in ancient times against stomach germs. There were some trials carried out and all sorts of people were tested on all sorts of beverages, and what came top of the list for effectiveness against gastric upsets was orange juice. What came not far behind orange juice was unfermented wine, and then a number of other preparations came along and then fermented wine that was quite low on the list. The more fermentation the more ineffective was the fruit of the vine the grape juice to help with stomach disorders.
